Darrell Lombard and his unique mixed raced funky and talented band was hot and controversial in that this band and bond from this group of artists consisted of players of black and white descent when it was still controversial to do so in the late 1960s to early 1970s. When bands like The Average White Band, and The Doobie Brothers, were also making their mark, Darrell and his great group of artists were doing the same thing under the radar in the great NW. This was when record labels were suppressing bands and artists that could compete and distract from the products and bands that were being pushed during that time on their labels.
But bands like Lombard Steet did exist. You just were not informed. And these cool venues in the early 1970s -1980s were frequented by some of the greats and local connoisseurs alike.
Now you know...
LOMBARD STREET, featured a NW Great sensation named Darrell Lombard as the bands lead vocalist and their Hammond B3 and keyboard extraordinaire, hence the band name. But the name was and is even today, a unique street popular in San Francisco known for its hills and winding turns.
Darrell Lombard singing behind his Hammond B3, had been playing with the sensational Karl Peters who was on drums for years playing as a Duo, Trio, and a Quartet. Karl was also a valued member of his previous band STREAMS in the early to mid-seventies. Karl was also one of the original mebers of Lombard Street
Mark Whitman was one of the original band mates of Darrell Lombard. He came from a band called Springfield Rifle, along with Ron Hendee in the early 1970s. Mark was unique in that he was a gifted Rythm and Blues player who had a unique gift of playing funk and rhythm guitar and who could also replicate work done by BB King and then Jimmi Hendrix without working hard. Mark was an Original Member of Lombard Street.
Ron Hendee, from Streams on trumpet provided a very cool and soulful sound that always complemented blended well with the band. Ron was also a unique vocalist with his raspy boisterous voice complimenting Darrell and Mark Whitman as needed. Ron had the timing and the soul to add some unparalleled brass candy to this great band enjoyed by many.
Darrell soon teamed up with Wadie Ervin on bass. Wadie was always dedicated, talented and supportive. The perfect complement to Darrell whose main axe was the Hammond B3, with the foot base feature. This makes it tricky for a bass player when played simultaneously. Wadie was also one of the orignal members of Lombard Street.
Next a little later, came the talented and unique guitarist Keith Bystrom to replace Mark Whitman. Keith always provided a variety of guitar candy and warm vocals around their music arrangements.
Wadie then helped to bring on the rising Dan Greenblatt, on soprano, alto or tenor saxophone. As a five piece they were a force as evidenced on these elite tracks.
Studio work from Clark Gayton on trombone, with Dan Greenblatt, and Ron Hendee, are featured on a MDP HUB Mash calboration called "Skin Tight Brass ROMP MIX."
