Once upon a time, long ago there was a band from an Emerald City known as Seattle, WA. It was an odd city full of lots of rain and diverse people that all seemed to get along most of the time. It was also a city full of talent and rarely did the rest of their nation even know they existed. On occasion important people and talent from other cities and states would pass through and occasionally stumble upon the talent and witness in admiration on what they were seeing before their own eyes. But very few had the courage to tell others. Because surely no one would believe them.
One of those great unknown talents was a band called LOMBARD STREET. Which featured a NW Great sensation named Darrell Lombard, hence the band name. But the name was and is even today, a unique street popular in San Francisco known for its hills and crooked winding turns. Much like the lives of the music greats from their area, Seattle was a very trying place to work and to build a brand as it was not recognized by the masses. LOMBARD STREET was a symbol of the bands own plight and for anyone fighting that fight.
However, during this time and when the band was gaining their stride. Doors were opening and whoever was somebody was in front of this band for a truly amazing music experience. The band was diverse, the crowd was diverse, and the music was a showcase of that blend in the R & B and Smooth Jazz realm before it was a real thing. Darrell’s vocals and original tunes showcased around select cover favorites were a treat from this talented group of musicians.
It is unfortunate that this group of artists were never discovered nationally. But what is truly amazing is that we found their music. These are 8 of their best recordings during that time.
Oh, did we tell you there was a funky 9th HOT BONUS TRACK?
LOMBARD STREET, featured a NW Great sensation named Darrell Lombard as the bands lead vocalist and their Hammond B3 and keyboard extraordinaire, hence the band name. But the name was and is even today, a unique street popular in San Francisco known for its hills and winding turns.
Darrell Lombard singing behind his Hammond B3, had been playing with the sensational Karl Peters who was on drums for years playing as a Duo, Trio, and a Quartet. Karl was also a valued member of his previous band STREAMS in the early to mid-seventies.
Next came the talented and unique guitarist Keith Bystrom. Who always provided a variety of guitar candy warm vocals around their music arrangements.
Darrell soon teamed up with Wadie Ervin on bass. Wadie was always dedicated, talented and supportive. The perfect complement to Darrell whose main axe was the Hammond B3, with the foot base feature. This makes it tricky for a bass player when played simultaneously.
Wadie then helped to bring on the rising Dan Greenblatt, on soprano, alto or tenor saxophone. As a five piece they were a force as evidenced on these elite tracks
Darrell invited his longtime friend and prior band mate Ron Hendee, from Streams on trumpet.on 3 of these recordings.
Darrell also invited his young up-and-coming nephew Clark Gayton on trombone, to join Dan Greenblatt, and Ron Hendee on 3 of these recordings. Really bringing to life some of Darrell's great and impressive arrangements.
Any positive or constructive feedback on how to assist or best get our story and music out is appreciated.
